In a Connecticut embezzlement case, a woman is able to avoid jail time at sentencing.According to the Norwich Bulletin, in this case, the woman, a paralegal and bookkeeper in a law firm at the time, was able to get the sentence recuded down to first degree larceny in a plea deal, after agreeing to pay back almost all of the money taken, over $20,000.
These kinds of deals aren’t always common, but any deal that avoids jail time for a serious felony embezzlement charge is probably a good one. Paying restitution in exchange for a reduction in charge, or a plea to no jail time is a worthy defense strategy.
The person from whom the money was taken is typically most interested in getting the money back, more than anything else. So where that is an option, it is something of a win-win when facing serious embezzlement charges and a strong chance of jail time if convicted.
