According to this news report from the Desert Dispatch, the man allegedly stole over 93,000 in union funds over a 4 year period as a union official.

A federal grand jury in Riverside, CA indicted him last month, and the trial is expected to take place in March. If convicted on the 12 criminal counts, he is subject to a maximum sentence of 187 years in federal prison.

Criminal charges involving union funds often receive special and aggressive law enforcement attention, since union officials have an additional level of public trust and responsibility to the workers they are supposed to represent.

And the fact that some labor unions do have a history of corruption and suspicious history makes them subject to increased attention and federal laws that govern their financial transactions.
