Embezzlement from charitable organizations is one of the crimes that creates the most unsympathetic defendant. If you appear to be living well while allegedly stealing from a group helping disabled kids, that’s a tough case to defend in court. And that’s the exact situation a Rhode Island woman found herself in. She plead no contest to a number of counts of embezzlement, unlawful appropriation, and larceny in a Rhode Island criminal court.
She is accused of embezzling over half a million dollars from several companies she worked for over the years. Most recently, she is accused of brazenly pocketing client payments while working at a non-profit therapeutic riding facility, that helps disabled children get rehabilitation riding horses.
Prosecutors indicated that she used the money to go on lavish family vacations in Florida and Hawaii.
She is also wanted in Connecticut for parole violation and theft from a school.
Most people accused of embezzlement aren’t this brazen or shameless. More typically, someone charged with this crime borrows money at a desperate time, for what they think is a temporary bump in the road, and plan to pay it back as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way, and often thinks get worse before they get better, creating a cycle of desperation, and more money taken.
Embezzlement can be a tricky crime to defend, and requires an experienced defense lawyer prepared to follow the paper trail and explain and defend the circumstances.
